I’m interested in combining experimental rock deformation, petrology and numerical models of these experiments. A main goal in this regard is improving the quantification of solid-medium rock deformation experiments (Griggs-Rig) – mainly on the sample scale, regarding e.g. local stress variations. An important part of this work interaction between rock deformation and mineral reactions. The numerical modeling codes I use are so far self-written. For the future more potent codes developed by collaborating groups (e.g. LaMEM , JuliaGeodynamics) will be implemented and adapted from lithosphere scale to experiments.
I believe that bringing the disciplines of experimental work and numerical modeling will drastically improve our understanding of the experiments. Furthermore, only when we manage to model well-constrained (and thus well-understood) experiments we will know how to properly use the experimental data when attempting to perform large-scale numerical simulations.
Nevertheless, coming from field-based structural geology, I always try to relate the experimental and modeling expertise to real rocks (and enjoy my short field season a lot). Reproducing and improving the understanding the outcrop scale are the next challenge for both experiments and models…
My analytical work mainly comprises Raman spectroscopy and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) besides classical Scanning electron microscopy imaging techniques.
